Toby Burton has a long and varied work history. Toby began their career in 1982 as a Political Officer for the British Diplomatic Service. In 1986, they moved to LEK Partnership as a Consultant. Two years later, they joined OC&C Strategy Consultants as a Senior Consultant. In 1992, Toby became an Associate Partner at PwC. In 1999, they joined Cisco Systems as a VP. In 2013, Toby became Chairman of SpaceCot, a start-up Oxford Space Structures that has pioneered the world's fastest deploying travel cot. SpaceCot was successfully sold in 2019. In 2012, Toby became Chairman of Alquist Ltd, a company that has pioneered the use of fibre optic based temperature management in data centres. In 2017, Toby became Business Development Director at Classlist, the world's largest app supporting school parent communities. In 2018, Classlist won Startup of the Year at BETT, the biggest edtech event in the world.

Toby Burton received their MBA from INSEAD in 1987. Toby completed their BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Cambridge in 1982. Toby attended Sevenoaks School, Kent from 1970 to 1977.
