Mark Thomson

Director General Elect at CERN

Mark Thomson is an accomplished physicist with a notable career in particle physics. As of January 2025, Mark serves as the Director General Elect at CERN, having rejoined the organization ahead of assuming the full directorship in 2026. Simultaneously, Mark maintains a position as Professor of Experimental Particle Physics at the University of Cambridge, a role held since October 2000, despite relocating to Switzerland. Between April 2018 and December 2024, Mark was the Executive Chair of the Science Technology and Facilities Council (STFC), where the focus was on advancing research in particle and nuclear physics while enhancing the UK's scientific infrastructure.
