Dan Emmett was born in Los Angeles, California, and received his B.A. from Stanford and J.D. from Harvard. He served as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco from 1964-1965 before becoming a Local Courts Commissioner for the Republic of Malawi, Central Africa. Upon returning to the States he joined the law firm Paul, Hastings, Janofsky, and Walker and worked there until 1970, when he co-founded Mochtar, Karuwin, and Komar, a law firm in Jakarta, Indonesia.
In 1971 he Co-founded Douglas, Emmett, and Company and currently is chairman of Douglas Emmett, Inc. (DEI/NYSE), a real estate company based in Santa Monica. Dan is active in a variety of environmental activities and has served on the board of numerous local environmental organizations including Los Angeles Waterkeeper, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, Environment Now Foundation, and Sustainable Conservation, and has been involved in environmental programs at Harvard Law School, UCLA Law School, and Stanford University. Dan and his wife Rae have four children, all of whom attended Cate.
