Philip Koopman is an Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University since January 1996, focusing on research and teaching in embedded systems, software safety, and autonomous vehicle testing. Prior to this role, Philip served as a Principal Research Engineer at United Technologies Research Center from March 1991 to December 1995, where responsibilities included research and advanced product development in various fields such as automotive and aerospace technologies. Philip began their career as a Senior Scientist at Harris Semiconductor from May 1989 to December 1990, leading CPU architecture efforts. Earlier experience includes serving in the US Navy from December 1982 to May 1987 as a sonar and weapons officer and as Deputy Department Head for System Engineering at TRICCSMA. Philip earned a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (1987-1989) and a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1978-1982).
