Thomas Bottein

R&d Coordinator at Carbon Waters

Thomas Bottein has a diverse work experience in various scientific and research roles. Thomas started their career as a Trainee at TOTAL, where they developed and optimized analysis methods for water quality and oil products. Thomas then worked as a Research Assistant at Idenix Pharmaceuticals, performing pronucleotide syntheses and molecule characterization for potential use in hepatitis C treatment.

Thomas continued their research journey as a PhD Assistant at the Department of Materials, University of Oxford, where they focused on carbon nanotubes synthesis and characterization for flow catalysis and energy applications. Thomas later joined Merck as an Industrial Placement, contributing to the development of organic transistors for plastic thin film electronics.

After that, Thomas worked as an Engineer Intern at CEA - French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, conducting combined analyses of 2D nanomaterials for energy applications. Thomas then became an Invited Researcher at IBM, specializing in the synthesis and characterization of thin films made through sol-gel processes, with a focus on gas sensing applications for the Internet of Things.

Thomas further pursued their research interests as a PhD Researcher at Aix Marseille University, where they combined materials science and microfabrication techniques for large-scale nanostructuration in photonics (metamaterials). Thomas achieved significant milestones during their PhD, including 13 scientific publications, 3 international patents, and receiving multiple awards.

Most recently, Thomas joined Carbon Waters as a Project Manager - Formulations & Coatings. In this role, they are involved in technical development of formulations and paints using graphene additives for enhanced material corrosion resistance, thermal management, and electrical management. Thomas also works on proof-of-concepts and integration of solutions in customers' industrial processes.

Thomas Bottein completed their Integrated preparatory cycle at École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille from 2009 to 2011. Thomas then went on to pursue a Master's Degree (Diplome d'ingénieur chimiste) in Materials Chemistry at École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier from 2011 to 2015. Additionally, in 2014 and 2015, they obtained a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Science des Matériaux from the University of Montpellier.
