Dr. Vivek Goel is chair of CIHI’s Board of Directors. He is the president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo and currently serves as a member of the federal government’s COVID-19 Immunity Task Force and as chair of the Expert Advisory Group for the Pan-Canadian Health Data Strategy. He is a professor in the schools of Pharmacy and Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo.
His past roles include vice-president and provost, and vice-president of Research and Innovation at the University of Toronto, where he was a professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. He was the founding president and CEO of Public Health Ontario and founding scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. He has served on many not-for-profit boards, including those of St. Michael’s Hospital, the Vector Institute and Compute Ontario.
Dr. Goel is a licensed physician and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, having obtained his medical degree from McGill University. He did his post-graduate medical training in community medicine at the University of Toronto, and he also obtained a master’s degree (MSc) in health administration from the University of Toronto and a master’s degree (SM) in biostatistics from Harvard University’s School of Public Health.
