Michael Lozano

Program Manager at CALmatters

Michael Lozano has worked for several companies since 2006. Michael began their career as a Club Leader at Woodcraft Rangers, where they coached 20 youth in drumline classes and taught music reading and homework tutoring with state guidelines. Michael also organized parade and school performances. In 2009, they became a Community Liaison and Volunteer at the Minority-Focused Alliance of Pre-Health Students, where they organized health fair event logistics and executed city-wide community outreach, as well as coordinated meetings between clinics, volunteers, and city officials. In 2012, they interned as a Research Assistant at the County of Orange, where they designed, analyzed, and presented survey results to the executive team, participated in team meetings and presentations, and handled sensitive client information in a responsible, ethical manner. From 2013 to 2016, they worked as an Intern, Staff Reporter, and Interim Manager at Ethnic Media Services, where they led editorial meetings and assisted in story development with a cohort of 15 youth reporters. In 2018, they were a Reporting Fellow at UCLA's Laboratory for Environmental Narrative Strategies (LENS), where they were commissioned for storytelling on watershed redevelopment in Los Angeles, focusing on indigenous culture. From 2020 to 2021, they were a Votebeat Reporter at CalMatters, covering Southern California and beyond in collaboration with the Long Beach Post. Michael is currently a Senior Writer & Assistant Editor at CALÓ NEWS, and will soon become a Program Manager at CalMatters.

Michael Lozano attended California State University, Long Beach from 2005 to 2011, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Sociology Honors.
