Andrew Johnston has a diverse work experience that spans over two decades. Andrew started their career in the finance industry as an Investment Banking Analyst at Credit Suisse. Andrew then worked as a Private Equity Analyst at Conning.
In 2003, Andrew transitioned into the humanitarian sector and joined the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. as a Program and Financial Officer, where they contributed to the creation of a National Strategic Plan for HIV/AIDS in Haiti.
Andrew's experience in humanitarian work continued with roles at various organizations. Andrew served as a Program Manager at the International Rescue Committee, overseeing operations in West Africa. Andrew also worked as a Grants Manager and Field Coordinator in Pakistan, leading projects related to earthquake recovery and Afghan refugee assistance.
Andrew has also worked in conflict-affected areas such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they served as a Field Coordinator, managing programs in education, gender-based violence, and health.
More recently, Andrew served as the Chief of Party at Save the Children US, responsible for implementing the USAID Learn to Read project in Lao PDR. Andrew also worked at RTI International, where they held roles such as Deputy Chief of Party and Monitoring and Evaluation Consultant.
Currently, Andrew is the Director of Medical Oxygen Education and Training at Build Health International, where they are involved in scaling up education and training activities for their medical oxygen program in low- and middle-income countries.
Throughout their career, Andrew has demonstrated their expertise in program management, capacity building, and strategic planning in the humanitarian sector.
Andrew Johnston began their education at Interlochen Center for the Arts, where they obtained a high school/secondary diploma and certificates from 1990 to 1994. Andrew then attended Columbia University from 1994 to 1998, where they earned a B.A. degree in Economics. Later on, in 2010 to 2011, Andrew studied at Harvard Graduate School of Education, completing an Ed.M. degree in International Education Policy, Statistics, and Adult Development. Andrew continued their education at Harvard Kennedy School from 2012 to 2013, where they received a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree specializing in Adaptive Leadership, International Relations, Organizing, and Case Studies in Bio-Social Health.
In addition to their formal education, Andrew also obtained several certifications. In 2009, they received a certification in NGO Security Management from REDR UK and the Centre for Safety and Development (CSD). In 2013, they attended a conference in the Tavistock Tradition on Leadership and Authority in Contemporary Organizations, organized by The A.K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems. In 2016, Andrew obtained certifications in Procurement Planning & Execution: Grants & Cooperative Agreements from InsideNGO and Low Rage (Bush) Driving and High Range (Defensive) Driving from OnCourse 4wd Training. Their most recent certification, acquired in 2017, is in USAID Rules and Regulations: Grants and Cooperative Agreements from InsideNGO.
