Scott I. Canel is a trustee at the Art Institute of Chicago. Prior to that, they served as the assistant vice president of integrated marketing and communications at Valparaiso University from August 2012 to April 2015. In this role, they directed marketing communications and served as the chief communications officer for the private university. Before their time at Valparaiso University, Canel worked as the director of marketing communications for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from September 2002 to September 2012. In this role, they directed marketing communications for the headquarters of the 4.2-million-member nonprofit organization. Canel began their career in marketing with an internship at Thrivent in January 2001. Scott then went on to work for The Walt Disney Company from January 1999 to December 2000 in their college program.
Scott I. Canel has a Master of Science from Northwestern University in Integrated Marketing Communications (Medill) and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) from Valparaiso University in Marketing and Art. Scott also has Executive Education in Digital Marketing Strategy and Strategic Storytelling from Columbia Business School.
