Jose M. (Chema) Peña has a long and varied work experience, beginning in 1999 as an Invited Graduate Student at the National Research Council Canada. Jose M. (Chema) then held a similar role at the same institution in 2000. In 2003, they were a Socio Fundador at Nayade Group Solutions, and a Profesor Titular / Associate Professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. In 2004, they became a Visiting Researcher at Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique (LaBRI). In 2014, they were CTO & Cofounder at Lurtis Rules. From 2015 to 2018, they were an Academic Visitor at the University of Oxford. In 2018, they became an AI Expert at Toptal, and a Data Science Lead at ARIX Technologies. In this role, they were responsible for predictive maintenance of oil & gas pipe infrastructure, machine learning on robot-collected pipe corrosion detection, and data analytics and visualisation.

Jose M. (Chema) Peña completed their Doctorado/PhD in Informática/Computer Science at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid from 1998 to 2001. Prior to that, they obtained an Ingeniería/MsSc in Informática/Computer Science from the same university between 1991 and 1997.
