John Welch is a Professor at the Dept. Archaeology and School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University, appointed since April 2005, focusing on enhancing heritage stewardship for Indigenous communities through research, training, and outreach initiatives. As Director of the Online Professional Heritage Resource Management Graduate Program, John oversees program development, recruitment, and sustainability. Additionally, John serves as the Director of the Landscape and Site Preservation Program at ARCHAEOLOGY SOUTHWEST and as Board Secretary and Founding Director for the Fort Apache Heritage Foundation, which aims to support Apache culture and heritage. Past roles include a Steering Committee Member of the Intellectual Property in Cultural Heritage Project and Historic Preservation Officer for the White Mountain Apache Tribe, where John managed programs safeguarding archaeological sites on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. John Welch holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Arizona, complemented by an MA and BA in the same field.
