Pier Luigi Buttigieg serves as the Principal Investigator and Senior Data Scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research since May 2023. Prior experience includes roles as Digital Knowledge Steward and Senior Data Scientist at GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel from June 2020 to April 2023, and Data Scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute from June 2017 to May 2020. Buttigieg's background also includes a post-doctoral fellowship at the Alfred Wegener Institute and research in marine microbial ecology during a postdoctoral associate position at the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM). Educational qualifications encompass a PhD in microbial genomics, an MSc in Marine Microbiology from the International Max Planck Research School, and a BSc in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from Jacobs University Bremen.
