Peter Zaffino

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer at AIG

Peter Zaffino serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AIG, a leading provider of global property and casualty insurance and risk solutions. AIG has operations in more than 190 countries and jurisdictions through AIG operations and network partners.

Since joining the company in 2017, Mr. Zaffino has played an instrumental role in AIG’s turnaround — improving underwriting performance, reducing volatility, improving the company’s balance sheet and restoring AIG as an industry leader. Before being appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2021, Mr. Zaffino served as the company's Global Chief Operating Officer from 2017 to 2019, and assumed the additional role of President in late 2019.

Additionally, Mr. Zaffino has been a proponent of the company’s title sponsorship of the AIG Women’s Open, a major women’s golf championship. Since the company’s first year as sponsor in 2019, he has grown the total purse and helped expand the championship to a wider audience.

With more than 30 years of experience in insurance and reinsurance, Mr. Zaffino has solidified himself as a thought leader across the financial services industries on emerging risks. His tenure at AIG was preceded by executive leader positions at Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC), where he was Chairman of MMC’s Risk & Insurance businesses (Marsh and Guy Carpenter) beginning in 2015. In tandem with this role, he also served as Chief Executive Officer of Marsh from 2011 to 2017. Prior to his role at Marsh, Mr. Zaffino was President & Chief Executive Officer of Guy Carpenter from 2008 to 2011.

Before joining Guy Carpenter, Mr. Zaffino held executive roles at several market-leading companies, including a GE Capital portfolio company dedicated to alternative risk insurance and reinsurance. Outside of his executive roles, Mr. Zaffino holds memberships with The Geneva Association and Business Roundtable.

Mr. Zaffino earned a B.A. in economics from Boston College and an MBA in finance from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Additionally, he holds two professional credentials from The Institutes: Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU.)

Operating on the mindset of servant leadership, he is a board member at both The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund.
