Director, Embedded Software Engineering – Hybrid

Our client is the world leader in pharmacy robotics, and our robotic IV automation system empowers pharmacists and technicians with tools to improve dose accuracy and make IV pharmacy compounding safer while reducing costs and enabling compliance.

As Software Embedded Engineering Director, you will lead the entire software development life cycle, including establishing requirements, architectures, and software implementation for our autonomous pharmaceutical robotic system, working with other functions such as Mechanical, Product, and Manufacturing. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in embedded software system design, C++ expertise, software unit and automated testing methodologies, and general robotics, as well as the ability to thoroughly analyze existing systems and adapt existing architectures to ensure the achievement of customer objectives. Strong track record of delivering software-enabled hardware products, with firmware development for products with robotic components. We are looking for someone with solid drive, ownership, and hands-on technical leadership to ensure successful delivery of customer outcomes. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong leadership and management to a team of embedded software engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.

  • Drive a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team.

  • Oversee embedded software development for medical devices, including real-time systems, control algorithms, and user interfaces.

  • Develop and implement a strategic roadmap for embedded software engineering that aligns with the company's goals and long-term vision.

  • Identify opportunities for technology advancements and drive innovation in software development.

  • Work closely with the Product Development Lead and Project Management office to develop program schedules, solve technical and execution problems, and report to Senior Management on project status.

  • Identify potential risks in software development and create strategies to mitigate them, ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical devices.

  • Mentor and develop team members, ensuring their growth and career progression.

  • Be a hands-on leader who is willing to dive deep as and when needed.

  • Guide team in refining system architecture based on assessment of progress/challenges to-date

  • Ensure that peer code reviews, use-case testing, debugging, etc. meet company standards.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Established success in building, growing, and developing fast-paced, highly experienced software teams spanning multiple embedded disciplines.

  • Strong embedded software development knowledge and experience developing software applications for hardware and general robotic systems.

  • Expert knowledge of embedded microprocessor tools and hardware peripherals.

  • Proficiency in C/C++ and debugging embedded systems BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or other engineering disciplines.

  • Experience using C++ in a Linux environment.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Drives design of complex features and new products. Contributes to technology strategy.

  • Owns direction, technical vision, and strategy direction across multiple projects.

  • Grows and mentors staff.

  • Good interpersonal communication skills, working within an Agile Development framework.

  • Ability to work independently with high competency and little guidance.

Basic Qualifications

  • A BS degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field is required. A master’s Degree or higher is preferred.

  • 15+ years of experience in embedded software/firmware development and integration experience with hardware and software with more than 6 years of management experience.

  • 3+ years of experience in complex embedded robotic systems including hardware and software design, communication protocol design, and control systems.

  • Experience developing software for Visual C++ or C# along with .Net Framework.

  • Knowledge of Linux systems to develop hardware control drivers for device development.

  • Ability to own direction, technical vision, and strategy direction across multiple projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Systems engineer

  • Experience in the medical device industry or other industries operating under a quality management system. Knowledge of ISO 13485, ISO 14971, ISO 62304, and CFR 820 is a plus.

  • Experience in the design of software-driven electromechanical Class II medical devices.

  • Design knowledge of software-driven vision or image recognition applications is a plus.

  • Knowledge of Docker and Containerization technologies

  • Knowledge of applications using Microsoft SQL Server or similar database applications

  • Experience in Embedded Linux software development, including BSP and drivers.

Work Conditions

  • Hybrid work schedule - 3 days a week onsite.

  • Ability to travel 10-15% of the time
