Ten Indiana Startups to Know in 2020

The Hoosier State has been home to many industries over the years, from manufacturing to a lineup of professional sports teams and facilities like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, Indiana is entering a new phase and quickly becoming a hotbed for midwestern startups and large tech companies.

The state’s largest city and capital, Indianapolis, is on the radar of the biggest names in tech, as Salesforce’s largest presence outside of San Francisco is in Indianapolis and Amazon picked the city as a top 20 finalist for is HQ2.

But it isn’t just the state’s largest city that is attracting startups, as six Indiana cities among the 2020 Best of the Midwest: Startup Cities Rankings. There are quite a few contributing factors to the state’s success in attracting young companies, including a low cost of living, access to a number of high-ranking local universities, and a central location within the U.S.

1. Upper Hand

Upper Hand creates business management software for boutique fitness studios, sports facilities, and sports training academies. The company, which has raised $4.4 million since its inception in 2012, has quickly made a name for itself and in 2018 was crowned the “Best Tech Company” in the Indianapolis Star’s inaugural Best Things Indianapolis competition. Upper Hand's software platform helps automate business operations to “personalize, simplify, and maximize the customer journey,” in turn making the lives of fitness and sports facility staff easier.

2. Lessonly

Lessonly, which was founded in 2012, is on a mission to help teams change how they work, so their people can live better lives. The startup’s training software can help translate important work knowledge into lessons that accelerate productivity. The company’s innovative approach to team training has earned it over 1.3 million users at more than 500 companies, including McAffee and HelloFresh.

3. Xiber

The young internet service provider and competitive local exchange carrier made its splash onto the scene in 2013. While the company might be new, its staff is experienced and features engineers who “have been building networks for over a decade and started during the .com internet boom of the late 90s,” according to the company’s website. Xiber, which is based in Indianapolis, has grown quickly and now has facilities in 18 states from coast to coast. The company prides itself on supporting a non-hierarchical, flat internet and is committed to net neutrality.

4. hc1

Founded in 2011, hc1 aims to provide data-driven insights that lead to better patient outcomes. The company’s unique platform eliminates waste and personalizes care for health systems and diagnostic laboratories nationwide. The company also addresses a major concern in the United States, the opioid epidemic. Armed with hc1’s platform, physicians can prescribe drugs with the lowest risk of therapy failure and adverse side effects by going beyond the immediate facts and examining a patient’s complete pharmacological history and lifestyle.

5. Anvl

Headquartered in Fischers, Indiana, Anvl combines technology and corporate safety to help identify and mitigate hazards encountered by frontline workers. The company’s platform can provide users with actionable data that can prevent injuries, boost productivity, and reduce costs. Anvl is a relatively fresh face on the startup scene as it was founded in 2018, but the company is looking to grow quickly and aims to fill 41 new positions by the end of 2022.

6. Perceivant

Perceivant is an Indianapolis-based EdTech company that publishes and provides courseware that replaces traditional textbooks. The result is a more cost-effective and interactive learning experience for students everywhere through both its web and mobile applications. The company’s tools also benefit teachers and school administrators with an easy-to-use dashboard for instructors to view class and student performance as well as the ability to integrate with a school’s learning management system for grade sync.

7. DroneDek

DroneDek is creating the next generation of mailboxes by developing a landing system for drone deliveries. The company’s solution will allow customers to fully automate the delivery process with a safe, secure, weatherproof receptacle, that notifies users of a delivery. The company’s next-gen mailbox will also have the capability to be heated and cooled, allowing DroneDek’s containers to be used for food delivery as well. To improve security the company offers a camera inside its mailbox to record the delivery from beginning to end.

8. Emplify

Based in Fishers, Indiana, Emplify is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company that supplies employee engagement software that gives employees a voice. Emplify provides companies with a platform to gather feedback for company executives through quarterly, confidential surveys that utilize psychometrically-validated questions to find areas of improvement across nearly two dozen engagement drivers. The startup also provides its customers with an Employee Engagement Strategist who can provide suggestions on the surveys and next steps.

9. Springbuk

Indianapolis-based Springbuk is on a mission "to prevent disease with data." To do so, the startup provides companies with a Health Intelligence platform, which is an innovative health analytics software solution that unifies medical claims, pharmacy, biometric, and activity data. Companies can then use Springbuk’s software to determine the holes in their healthcare coverage and then offer services that could solve the issue.

10. Malomo

Malomo is improving the post-purchase process for e-commerce brands by turning shipment tracking into a marketing channel. The Indianapolis-based startup helps company’s design unique post-purchase experiences for their customer with branded tracking pages and shipping notifications, which can make a difference as customers check their order’s tracking information 3 times on average.
