Reuters has promoted Alessandra Galloni to serve as the first female Editor-in-Chief in the news outlet’s 170-year history. Galloni's appointment, which be official as of April 19, follows an announcement from earlier this year that long-time Editor-in-Chief Stephen Adler will retire from his role at the end of April.

Based out of London, Galloni will sit on Reuters' executive committee and oversee all editorial functions for the newsroom and the company’s 2,500 journalists in 200 locations around the world.

"Alessandra is a transformative and inspirational leader with outstanding journalistic credentials, a truly global perspective and a compelling vision for the future of news," Reuters President Michael Friedenberg said in a . "She was the standout candidate in an extensive, global search and highly competitive recruitment process, which featured many impressive internal and external candidates. Alessandra has driven innovation, speed and quality throughout our newsgathering operation since becoming Global Managing Editor.

She first joined the global news titan in 2013 as an Editor in the company’s Southern Europe bureau. She eventually worked her easy up to her most recent position as Global Managing Editor in 2015, where she oversaw news planning and creation for Reuters newsroom. Before her time at Reuters, Galloni honed her skills during a 13-year career at The Wall Street Journal.

Steve Hasker, the CEO of Reuters’ parent company, Thomson Reuters, said: "Her skills, talent and expertise are ideal for this moment in the story of the world's leading newsroom. I have no doubt Reuters will achieve great things under her editorship – and I join many others in thanking Steve Adler for his outstanding service to public service journalism and to Thomson Reuters."

Galloni said. “It is an honor to lead a world-class newsroom full of talented, dedicated and inspiring journalists. I am so grateful to Steve for his mentorship and for putting a visionary, enduring stamp on Reuters, and to Michael for his leadership and for this opportunity."
