Larry Augustin, VP of Applications at Amazon Web Services, has left the company after two years, according to His departure is considered a major loss for Amazon’s business application and open-source software endeavor.
First joining the company in 2019, Augustin was an integral part of the cloud giant’s ongoing effort to generate more revenue from applications, rather than its cloud servers and databases. During his tenure, Augustin oversaw a host of different services, including the Amazon Connect contact center service, Alexa for Business, and Honeycode, a service that lets non-developers build apps on the cloud.
Augustin has over 30 years of experience in open-source software as an executive, board member, angel investor, advisor and entrepreneur. According to his Linkedin profile, he’s even a part of the small group that coined the term “open-source.” Most recently, he was CEO of SugarCRM, a developer of open-source, customer-management software, for nearly 10 years.
AWS continues to be the and is considered a market leader in cloud infrastructure. However, it trails behind competitors like Microsoft and Google when it comes to business applications. Augustin’s hire was a key part of trying to accelerate their market presence.
Augustin’s departure also comes at a time of enormous leadership upheaval at the internet conglomerate. Jeff Bezos announced in an annual shareholder’s meeting on May 26 that July 5 would be his last day as CEO. His longtime lieutenant, CEO of AWS Andy Jassy will be stepping in to take his place.
On top of these changes, another tech veteran on the web services team, exited in February 2020. Bosworth was apparently working on a new product that helps users create business apps with little or no software code at the time of his departure.
