Jack Dorsey has officially left Twitter’s board of directors, bringing an end to his final chapter at the social media titan he co-founded 16 years ago.

Dorsey, who also serves as the chief executive of fintech startup Block (formerly called Square), initially revealed the move in November 2021 when he handed the keys to the CEO’s office to Parag Agrawal. In Twitter’s November , the company stated that Dorsey would stay on the board “until his term expires at the 2022 meeting of stockholders.” At the time he also passed his role as Chairman of the board to long-time board member and Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor.

Dorsey’s move to step away from the micro-blogging platform also comes as Elon Musk continues his bid to take over the company. Dorsey has been supportive of Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter.

Recently, Dorsey has been critical of Twitter’s board, and even in April that the company’s governing body and internal power struggles had “consistently been the dysfunction of the company.” Dorsey was removed as Twitter’s CEO in 2008 and replaced by fellow co-founder Ev Williams before returning to the company’s helm in 2015.

Now that Dorsey has put his responsibilities and drama at Twitter behind him, he has more time to focus on his other projects such as Block and Bluesky, a Twitter-funded venture working to create a decentralized social media standard. Dorsey joined the board of the project earlier this year after it was officially set up as an independent entity.
