Former soccer star Steven Caldwell has joined youth sports analytics and video technology platform Best Athletes as CEO. Caldwell replaces Steve Currie as the top executive, however, Currie will remain with the company in an operations role.
Caldwell joins Best Athletes just after the launch of their platform and will lead the company as it seeks additional investment ā it previously raised $1 million in pre-seed money.
Before joining the startup, which aims to help young athletes get recruited by universities and professional teams, Caldwell was a Soccer Analyst with TSN and an Assistant Coach with the Canadian Menās National team. Caldwell brings experience as a professional soccer player. He has played for clubs in the English Premier League, the Scottish National team, and was the Captain of Toronto FC from 2013 to 2015.
āWe are thrilled to have someone of Stevenās calibre leading our company at this critical time in our growth, Best Athletes Co-Founder and Chair Barry MacLean . āWeāve built a really solid software analytics platform and our sales pipeline is robust. As the youth sports market opens up post COVID, we are positioned well to expand across Canada and enter the lucrative US market.ā
Best Athletes has attracted more than 190 coaches and 700 athletes signing up with the launch on June 1st and expects to recruit 2,000 athletes to its platform through the fall of 2021. To help with its fundraising, the company has also launched a campaign on Canadian equity fundraising site FrontFundr.
